what is MAT?

Muscle Activation Techniques® is a revolutionary approach to the assessment and correction of muscular imbalances within the body due to injury, aging and sport. It's a straightforward, non-invasive technique providing tools to evaluate an individual's ability to produce muscle contraction and "jumpstart" the muscle to function with maximum efficiency.

Imagine your muscular system functioning as a sports team. Each player has a specific role within the team. When one player gets injured, the remaining players must step up to cover the injured player, in addition to their own responsibilities. It can work temporarily, but over time the players become fatigued, more susceptible to injury, and, if pushed too hard, they may eventually shut down.

Your body operates on a similar principle. Each muscle is designed for a specific role, working together to make the whole system operate. When certain muscles are subjected to excessive stress, their ability to operate optimally becomes compromised. In response,  the other muscles then tighten up to protect the body, a phenomenon known as compensation. Over time it can lead to muscular imbalances, which are often the cause of fatigue, joint pain, instability and restricted range of motion.

Muscle Activation Techniques® developed by Greg Roskopf, is based on the principle that muscle tightness is secondary to muscle weakness. Any form of stress can lead to muscle inhibition, disrupting the strong neurological connection necessary for muscle function. When this occurs, a demand is put on other muscles to do the work creating compensation patterns.

The focus of MAT™ is to identify and treat muscle weakness-not tightness. MAT™ helps to correct these muscle imbalances restoring normal body alignment,  improving muscle function, and creating a foundation for optimal muscle strengthening and training, thereby, decreasing pain and reducing the risk of injury.

“Our goal with Muscle Activation Techniques…. Is to provide a sense of stability, and if you provide a sense of stability, the body will give you all the mobility in the world."-Greg Roskopf,owner/developer of MAT
